Beach Getaways: Focus on Florida

by LoAnn Halden

For some, winter weather represents a delightful distraction, a time to polish the skis, unpack the sweaters and guzzle hot chocolate before a crackling fire. If you fall under that category, this is not the Travel Topic for you.

But if the thought of facing another icy day sends chills down your spine even while you're tucked under the blankets and you long for surf and sand, it's time to make like a snowbird and migrate south. Even a weekend can go a long way toward thawing out those frozen batteries, and no place can guarantee a sun-soaked, gay-friendly beach getaway like Florida.

To narrow it down a destination, take this simple taste test. Are you looking for an uber-gay spot filled with men-only guesthouses and dozens of gay bars that combines city amenities with a laid-back vibe? Fort Lauderdale should be right up your alley. Do you like your beach to come with urban access, international flavor and lots of muscular men in Prada? Miami Beach is calling to you. If tank tops and shorts are your preferred attire and you love a quaint small-town atmosphere (that also allows its male dancers to go nude), then Key West has your name all over it.

We've assembled a few highlights in dining, accommodation and nightlife options for each destination. Don't see your favorite? Click at the end of each section for more options.

FORT LAUDERDALE Fort Lauderdale regularly tops polls of favorite gay getaways. It's friendly, an easy flight away from most major hubs and home to a gay bar for every taste. For a tres gay beach experience, visit Sebastian Street and A1A.

The most difficult decision you'll face will occur before leaving home: choosing among the 25-plus gay guesthouses in the area. Among the splurge-worthy options, both The Royal Palms ($189-349; clientele: men/women) and The Flamingo - Inn Amongst the Flowers ($160-355) offer easy beach access and amenities galore. The budget-conscious will find basic rooms and a friendly atmosphere at the Palm Plaza Resort (2801 Riomar St; 954/260-6568; $84-159; clientele: men) within walking distance of Fort Lauderdale Beach.

Fort Lauderdale bars are generally devoid of attitude. This is the land of the casual watering hole, not the $20 martini. If you've packed your dancing shoes, a perfect weekend would include Fagtabulous Friday at China White, the most glam space in town; Saturday night at Steel, a multi-room club with video lounge and outdoor patio; and Sunday tea dance at Jackhammer, an upscale version of a leather bar.
